Muskingum University Department of Music hosts Youthfest

    The Muskingum University Department of Music will host the first of its YouthFest ’09 festivals for high school musicians, Youthfest =09 Chorus, on Saturday and Sunday, November 7 and 8, on the campus.  

    YouthFest '09 Chorus will bring 62 high school vocalists, chosen by their choral music teachers, from 17 high schools to the campus for two days of intensive study in music and performance. During the course of the festival, students will have four option periods in which they may attend workshops in music theory, music appreciation, vocal wellness and “YouthFest Star,” a clinic structured similarly to the television show American Idol.”  Included will be seven hours of choral rehearsal, to prepare students to perform in a concert on Sunday, November 8 at 300 p.m. in Brown Chapel on the campus. This performance is free and open to the public.

    Also appearing at the festival will be the Muskingum University Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, performing their annual fall concert, on Saturday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Brown Chapel.  The concert, under the direction of Professor of Music Robert Owen Jones, will be given for YouthFest participants, their parents and teachers and is also free and open to the public.

    Working as clinicians for the festival are Dr. Joyce Alesandrini, music theory; Mary Schlacks, music appreciation; Carol Wilcox-Jones, vocal wellness and soprano;  Dr. Laura Schumann, YouthFest Star; Julie Lisle Marratta, alto; Matthew Marratta, tenor; and Charles Snyder, bass.  The festival pianist is Julie Lisle Marratta.  Sectional rehearsal pianists include Dr. Mark Gallant, Julie Lisle Marratta, Muskingum student Stephanie Winegar, and Muskingum alumnus Matthew Downing.

    Participating music teachers and high schools include: Doug Maschue, Beallsville;  Kate Edington, Bridgeport; Rosie Buckalew, Buckeye Trail; Christina Walker, Cambridge; Mary Beth Lee, Centerburg; Peg Weber, Central Crossing; Liz Bausch, Claymont; Joslin Shaffer, Conotton Valley; Michael Blowers, Coshocton; Kathy Baird, Crooksville; Deb Maston, Gahanna Christian Academy; Melanie Glazer, Indian Valley; Greg Milleson, John Glenn; Larilyn Whitescarver, Logan; Karen Barnes, Newcomerstown; Tenessa George, New Lexington; and Megan E. Sams, Tuscarawas Valley.

The next Youthfest '09 festival, for wind and percussion ensembles, will be held on November 14 and 15.
