The State Fire Marshal’s office reports that one individual has been arrested, in relation to a string of ten recent fires in Newark. The fires have all occurred over the past three weeks. On Tuesday, fires that occurred at 305 Main Street and 58 Bolen Court were both ruled as arson. The previous eight fires have also been declared arson. Investigators found multiple points of origin in both the Main Street and Bolen Court homes. As of Tuesday evening, charges made by the Newark Police Department against the suspect in custody were still pending. Shane Cartmill, public information officer for the state fire marshal’s office, says that Newark police anticipate the arrests of additional suspects.
As the investigation continues, officials have issued a Blue Ribbon Arson Reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification of the arsonist(s). Anyone with information is asked to call the State Fire Marshal's Fire & Explosion Investigation Bureau at 1-800-589-2728, Licking County Crime Stoppers at 740-349-6888, or the Newark Fire Department at 740-364-9329.
