On October 4, Blue Rock Station –  a sustainable living center located south of Philo –  will be open from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM as part of the largest demonstration of installed renewable energy practices and energy efficient buildings in the nation. The tour is coordinated by Green Energy Ohio, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting environmentally and economically sustainable energy polices and practices in Ohio. GEO is the Ohio Chapter of the American Solar Energy Society.

“The economic benefits of investing in clean energy have never been better,” says Blue Rock Station co-founder, Jay Warmke, “we’ll be talking about how to use passive solar energy in a number of different ways.” “All of these systems are so simple to create, and they can help combat rising energy costs, slash utility bills, and make for a very comfortable way to live... plus there is the incentive for some mighty big tax credits these days,” Warmke says.

Blue Rock Station is located 20 minutes south of Zanesville, just off of State Rout 60. The 38-acre site is the home of the first Earthship east of the Mississippi. The 2,200 sq. ft. home was designed by architect Michael Reynolds, of New Mexico. Features of the tour will include a greenhouse built from plastic bottles, a chicken chalet, and the Earthship, itself.

Free open houses demonstrating renewable energy-powered and energy efficient homes and buildings in Ohio will be shown across the state this weekend. The tour will show how everyday Ohio families are trimming their energy bills, increasing their energy independence and taking steps to address climate change. Visiting locations like Blue Rock Station provides a unique opportunity for people to visit open house sites and talk with owners living and working with clean energy technologies.
